While working as a librarian at the Public Library of Thisted , a town in the northwest part of Jutland, Denmark (1979-1994), I started searching for genealogical information on my ancestors.
Some of my ancestors came from the area so I had easy access to relevant sources at the local archive in Thisted.
In addition to the primary Danish sources for genealogical search, like parish registers and cencuses, I tried to use newspapers as a source.
To use newspapers as a source of information can be problematic, primarily because only a few have been indexed, but also because it is difficult to validate the information you find.
However, having had success in finding relevant information, I decided to start indexing the local newspaper, Thisted Amts Tidende, while continuing the search for information on my ancestors.
At this moment I have finished indexing the years 1882 through 1936 + 1944 and am still considering to continue the indexing process.
It has been an exciting experience to read and index the old newspaper and it is my hope that my work, too, will prove to be useful to other people interested in the local history.
The index:
Primarily the index covers the parishes of the municipality of Thisted, but in some cases data on different subjects related to the County of Thisted ("Thisted Amt") or the area Thy are included.
With a few exceptions the information indexed was written by a journalist or a local informant.
The index is in Danish and all records refer to the specific issue and page of the newspaper.
Following the references it is easy to find the full text in the newspaper, which among other places are being kept at the Public Library of Thisted.
Comments on the index:
Personalia:
All persons with a relation to the principal area have been indexed under the relevant parish. The following information is included:
- deaths and obituaries - golden or diamond weddings (mostly the mail part) - round birthdays over 50 - jubilees
Please notice that the same person might appear under several names, due to different spelling. This goes for both first name and surname/family name!
References to portraits/illustrations are included.
Daily life:
As a rule car accidents, trials, fires and so on have not been indexed. Royal visits are included.
Unions:
Information on the first general meeting or jubilee of a local union is included.
Politics:
As a rule reports on meetings in different local councils are left out, unless they contain information of relevance to major projects like building the local railways.
I have aimed at making a complete index on the relevant data, but the index is not a total index on the newspaper, the primary area being the municipality of Thisted.
Finally I should like to add that the index is based on my personal judgment of the relevancy of data. I am fully responsible for the index, including any errata and non-recorded information.
